The First Electronic Signature with an eSIM Phone Was Given in Estonia
SK ID Solutions together with Telia Estonia and IDEMIA tested the Mobile-ID solution on an eSIM and gave the first electronic signatures with it.
If the current SIM cards will be replaced by built-in eSIMs in the future, then it would no longer be possible to give electronic signatures in Estonia with Mobile-ID in the same way it has been done so far. But now, a technical demo has been done which proves that the current Mobile-ID solution will also work with eSIM technology and that it can be used to give electronic signatures.
Authentication and e-signing with Mobile-ID was done on a specially configured Samsung mobile device with IDEMIA’s eSIM solution that is in accordance with international GSMA standards. SK ID Solutions’ platform was used for the testing which, as a whole, is also used in the current Mobile-ID solution.
The Business Development Manager of Value Added Services at SK ID Solutions,Liisa Lukin said that SK has wished to test how Mobile-ID works on an eSIM solution for years, but until now, there had been no suitable device for that. “I am glad that in cooperation with Telia, we now got to do a successful technical demo that did not require any big adjustments to be made in the existing Mobile-ID solution. The next step is to create the processes for how the issuance of Mobile-ID for eSIM should be done. Additionally, it is very important for us to find a solution to how Mobile-ID running on an eSIM could be used to give a digital signature that is equal to one given by hand.”
The successful technical demo assures that Mobile-ID will also work with the next generation SIM card and that technically, it can be used to give electronic signatures.
