Smart-ID can now be applied for in SEB Bank

17.10.2017

Starting from today, Smart-ID can be applied for in SEB Bank’s bank branches, which means that now, Smart-ID can be applied for in both of Estonia’s biggest banks – SEB Bank and Swedbank. SEB Bank’s and Swedbank’s Latvian and Lithuanian branches will also join in issuing Smart-ID soon.

To apply for Smart-ID, the client has to visit their local SEB Bank’s bank branch where a bank employee will establish the client’s identity and will guide them through the creation of their Smart-ID account. When applying for Smart-ID at a bank branch, the client must open the Smart-ID app in their smart device, choose the option of authenticating their identity via SEB Bank, and create PIN1 and PIN2 codes in the app. The device will then display a registration code that the bank employee will add to the Smart-ID application along with the client’s personal data. After the printed application is signed, two bank employees will authenticate the client’s identity based on their identity document. The rest of the steps (confirming the user and the PIN codes) will be carried out on the client’s device.

According to Liisa Lukin, the Business Development Manager of Value Added Services at SK ID Solutions, applying for Smart-ID in bank branches is mainly aimed at those who for some reason are unable to use electronic authentication methods. “Being able to apply for Smart-ID in bank branches is important for those who for some reason cannot or do not wish to apply for Smart-ID via ID-card or Mobile-ID. At the same time, in Latvia and Lithuania for example, electronic use of ID-cards is not very widespread and so, being able to apply for Smart-ID in bank branches will be a determining factor in whether someone can start using Smart-ID. It is important to note that issuing Smart-ID in bank branches will allow the use of electronic solutions to a new target group of people who have not been able to use e-services so far. That is why it is very good that the option of applying for Smart-ID in bank branches is spreading.”

“SEB’s goal is to support its customers in implementing new authentication solutions. Issuing Smart-ID in our bank branches will strengthen our ability to organize a smoother transition from code cards to the new generation authentication solutions. Even though code cards will not disappear completely from our lives just yet, their usage in internet banking will be significantly limited starting from 2018. Figuratively, we are already asking our customers to check whether they only have one key to use internet banking, such as a code card, and if so, we are suggesting that they create a backup key – for example, Smart-ID,” said Triin Raudsepp, the Private Segment Manager at SEB Bank.

The innovative and convenient Smart-ID works on a simple principle: the user downloads the Smart-ID app from Google Play or App Store to his smart device and identifies himself electronically by using his Mobile-ID or ID-card or by visiting his local bank branch. As with the ID-card and the Mobile-ID, Smart-ID also requires the use of PIN1 and PIN2 codes which the user will create within the same app.

Smart-ID enables the use of various finance, education, telecommunications, energy and retail sector e-services. Using Smart-ID is free of charge. More information can be found at: smart-id.com.
